Rare Asko Finnish Modern Flame Birch Cabinet, Mid 20th Century
A rare Finnish Modern storage cabinet manufactured by Asko during the 1950s, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and the elegant simplicity that defines Scandinavian mid-century design. The cabinet is beautifully veneered in highly figured flame birch, creating a striking visual effect across the two doors. Softly rounded front corners, refined proportions, and elegantly shaped legs contribute to its sculptural appearance while demonstrating Asko’s high standard of cabinetmaking. Opening the doors reveals an exceptionally practical interior. Adjustable side shelving is complemented by a central pull-out shelving system with multiple sliding trays and a lower drawer, making the cabinet ideal for storing documents, table linens, collectibles, office supplies, or other household items. This uncommon interior configuration is seldom encountered and reflects the innovative functionality for which Finnish furniture manufacturers became internationally recognized. The warm golden birch veneer, clean architectural lines, and thoughtfully engineered storage make this cabinet equally suitable for a living room, dining room, study, or office. A fine and rarely encountered example of 1950s Finnish design by Asko that combines outstanding practicality with timeless Scandinavian aesthetics.
Dimentions:
Width: in (105 cm) Depth: in (45,5 cm) Height: in (110,5 cm)
Condition: Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The cabinet retains its original key, and the lock mechanism is in working order. The original receiving catch for the left door is no longer present, so the doors cannot currently be locked. A replacement receiving catch can be installed if desired, allowing the locking function to be restored without affecting the cabinet’s originality. The doors open and close properly, and the pull-out shelving system operates smoothly.
