Rare Finnish Archive Cabinet with Multi-Tier Document Trays, Circa 1960
A rare Finnish mid-century archive cabinet (arkistokaappi), dating to approximately the early 1960s. Originally designed for institutional use, this highly functional cabinet was intended for organizing and storing documents, files, and paperwork. Cabinets of this type were commonly found in offices, schools, municipal buildings, and possibly pharmacies. Behind the lockable double doors are 14 removable document trays, providing an efficient filing system for papers, folders, drawings, or archival materials. Several trays still retain handwritten Finnish labels from their original use, adding authentic historical character. The cabinet retains its original internal layout, including a spacious lower compartment for larger files or storage boxes. Constructed primarily from stained birch plywood with a durable institutional finish, the cabinet demonstrates the practical yet refined Scandinavian design philosophy of the period. The exposed plywood edges and quality joinery are characteristic of Finnish furniture manufacturing from the late 1950s and early 1960s. The cabinet features replacement door handle installed by a previous owner, while the remaining hardware appears consistent with the period. Today it serves equally well as a statement storage cabinet in a home office, studio, library, gallery, or retail interior. An increasingly difficult model to find, particularly in such complete and functional condition.
